Prêmio O. Henry
Os O. Henry Awards são prêmios concedidos anualmente desde 1919 nos Estados Unidos , premiando as melhores notícias.
História
O júri seleciona anualmente o que considera os vinte melhores contos em inglês publicados na imprensa americana e canadense e os publica em uma coleção intitulada The O. Henry Prize Stories (seguido pelo número do ano de publicação, por exemplo The O. Henry Prize Stories 2005 ).
O nome do prêmio vem do escritor americano O. Henry , pseudônimo de William Sydney Porter (1862–1910). DentroAbril de 1918, oito anos após sua morte, o Twilight Club (fundado em 1883 e mais tarde conhecido como The Society of Arts and Letters) se reuniu em sua homenagem no McAlpin Hotel em Nova York . Seus amigos se lembram dele com tanto entusiasmo que um comitê se reuniu no Biltmore Hotel emDezembro de 1918pensar em como homenageá-lo. Este comitê decidiu então criar um prêmio em seu nome, The O. Henry Awards, para "fortalecer a arte dos contos e estimular jovens autores" , dixit Blanche Colton Williams, que dirigiu o O. Henry Awards de 1919 a 1932. Para encontrar esta notícia, um comitê de leitura é criado, o Comitê de Premiação.
O primeiro volume de contos, O. Henry Memorial Award Prize Stories 1919 , é publicado pela Doubleday, Page & Company . Em 1927, a empresa vendeu os direitos anuais para a Doubleday, Doran & Company. De 1984 a 1996, a Anchor Books publicou a notícia paralelamente em brochura. Desde 1997, o O. Henry Prize Stories foi publicado diretamente em brochura pela Anchor Books.

Os nomes dos autores selecionados neste artigo são apenas aqueles que receberam o primeiro prêmio.
O primeiro prêmio foi para escritores pouco conhecidos, como personalidades famosas como Woody Allen em 1978, Stephen King em 1996, Truman Capote em 1948 ou William Faulkner em 1939 e 1949.
